Company & Community

In the United States, any commercial motor vehicle (CMV) which operates across state lines will soon have to become compliant with the new regulations set out by the FMCSA.
The idea behind the regulations is that companies will have to log their hours of service with electronic logging devices, or ELDs. The ELD replaces traditional paper logs, and synchronizes with the engine of the vehicle to collect, register and report important data automatically.

And time is ticking to make the change.

By December 18, 2017, all paper logs must be replaced by ELDs (those using automatic onboard recording devices, or AOBRD), are allowed as well. By December 16, 2019, all AOBRDs must be replaced by ELDs as well.

While Transport Canada has not yet announced any official rules for Canadian operators yet, it’s a matter of time before similar legislation is implemented north of the 49th parallel.

GPS to GO, Now You Know

Harry Harmes, franchise owner of ServiceMaster of the Valley in Kentville, Nova Scotia, began looking into telematics software after one of his trucks was stolen with no way of tracing it. Though the vehicle was eventually recovered, it was damaged and there were no security measures in place to keep this from happening again. That’s when Harmes turned to Geotab fleet tracking, provided by GPS to GO.

Why Geotab?

Several telematics companies pursued Harmes after he decided to make the switch for ServiceMaster, a commercial and residential carpet, furniture, and insurable loss cleaning company. He says he chose Geotab because they are a Canadian company and they offered the most seamless and streamlined installation process. After two years, Harmes takes pride in knowing where the company vehicle is at any point throughout the day. “If the vehicle is supposed to be on the job, I’d like to know that it’s on the job,” he says.

Resolving Customer Disputes

Harmes explains that this peace of mind that comes with knowing vehicle locations and routes has made customer service and billing simpler as well. The company is able to easily resolve disputes from customers about what time the truck arrived for service or for jobs that were billed by the hour.

Tracking Honest Behavior

measure-drivers-speed-gpsServiceMaster of the Valley also utilizes the Geotab technology to monitor driver behavior such as speeding. Harmes is able to point out drivers who were driving significantly over the speed limit, even if they claim otherwise.

Harmes made sure to tell his three drivers that the company’s installation of Geotab was not just about trying to monitor them but rather trying to get ahead of anyone who tries to steal his vehicles. He says, “[Invasion of privacy] is not the reason for using the product. It’s so that when I use it, anyone who steals my vehicle doesn’t know it’s on there.”

Securing Vehicle Locations

The company doesn’t fully utilize all of Geotab’s features, Harmes explains. But he recognizes the ability to track maintenance and mileage and he is hoping to delve more into those features soon.
Mostly though, he appreciates knowing where his trucks are and that if a situation arose where he needed to resolve a major customer issue, the software would be there to help.

People are becoming more and more conscious of the “three bottom lines” to a business – whether as someone running a business or making a career choice. In this post you will see how fleet management can help you achieve these 3 bottom lines. There’s not many products out there that have such a direct link to improving each of these three bottom lines, so it’s something we’re particularly proud of.

people planet profitWhat are the 3 bottom lines?

Profit: like we all know well, one of the main reasons for a business is to make a profit.

Planet: a business shouldn’t have a sole goal of making a profit with disregard to the planet. Most people realize nowadays that we need to start being more reticent of our impact to the environment and take on more sustainable business practices.

People: a business is only as strong as the people behind it, and our end-to-end fleet tracking and management system can help create a transparent and fair work environment while being considerate to the community.

How Our Fleet Tracking Solution Contributes to The 3 Bottom Lines

1) Increase Profit By Reducing Costs and Improving Customer Service

Fleet managers are well aware of the ways that a fleet tracking solution can help improve your bottom line:

  • Reduce mileage and fuel use between stops via more efficient routing.
  • Reduce vehicle wear & tear and maintenance costs via driver training for safer and more conservative driving habits.
  • Reach more customers in a day via more efficient and smarter dispatching.
  • Improve customer satisfaction via better ETA’s and communication with customers.
  • Reduce chances of theft and off-hours usage of vehicles.
  • Even reduce insurance rates,
  • And many more profit benefits.

2) Make Less of an Impact on the Environment

Until we all start driving electric vehicles or discover some other sustainable fuel source, the most we can do is be conservative and efficient in driving. Through the fleet management software, you can automatically create the most efficient routes for all your drivers – even while considering live traffic analysis. This means you can get more work done with less travel time – and less fuel consumption.

Plus, with all the driver training abilities through the fleet management software, like in-vehicle driver alerts for things like harsh braking or jackrabbit starts, you can make a significant improvement to how your drivers use their vehicles on the road. You might be surprised to know that aggressive driving can result in up to 40% more fuel consumption! Even just reducing the amount of idle time a driver has can make a big difference.

The Geotab fleet management software also keeps track of all your vehicle maintenance and engine status, so that you always have well-tuned vehicles and fix any issues before they become problems.

3) Create a Safer, More Rewarding Workplace for People

Our fleet tracking system is beneficial for the people within and around your business as well. Here’s how:

  • Ensure drivers are practicing safe and conservative driving habits, thus improving their own safety and reducing chances of an accident.
  • Better reward employees for good performance through the exceptionally accurate tracking of their activities in the fleet management software.
  • Ensure the vehicles they are driving are well-tuned and up-to-date on maintenance via the convenient notifications in your fleet management software.
  • Create zones on your service area maps to prevent (or notify) drivers from entering sensitive areas like school zones or quiet neighborhoods, thus also being considerate to the people of the community.

Recap:

3-bottom-lines

As you can see, fleet tracking is much more than just improving the profit of a business. It also helps create a safer and more rewarding workplace for employees, and reduces your carbon footprint all while making your business better.
